Why We Need Sleep
Although we all know that sleep is a very important
aspect of our daily life, often it is not known precisely why we need to actually go to sleep. Sleep is something that the body needs each day, generally for growth and repair. However, it is also true that the brain needs sleep in order to process the information gained during that day, and to re-organize it according to how necessary it is to retain that information. When we ask why we need sleep, we must look at both the physical and mental factors which benefit from having sleep. We can than also examine the factors which are affected when we don’t get enough sleep day-to-day. When we look at this, then it becomes very obvious why we need sleep, and why it is important that we take measures to ensure that we get the most optimal amounts and quality of sleep in our daily living.
When we look at the question of why we need sleep, we will start to see that several factors become prominent if we don’t get enough sleep at all. Firstly, a lack of sleep can lead to impaired memory. When we don’t get enough sleep, we become drowsy during the day, and this interferes with our brain’s ability to memorize and process information. This also affects our ability to learn new things. A lack of sleep can also affect our ability to perform simple motor skills. A person suffering a lack of sleep can often find more complex tasks, particularly tasks that involve several progressive stages, impossible to complete. Lack of sleep can also create feelings of anxiety, depression, irritability, and impatience, as well as interfering with the daily interactions with other people that we take for granted. Sleep also helps the body to regenerate, and is important for such activities as weight loss and muscle-building. It is during periods of sleep that the body reacts to the demands of the previous day, such as burning fat, or replacing used energy cells, and building more muscle after the demands of weight training.
The immune system also responds to sleep, and is another reason why we need sleep. Sleep allows the body to build up more antibodies to fight infection, and to recover from that day’s wear and tear. When we ask “why do we need sleep?” it becomes obvious that there is not a part of the body or of daily living that does not respond well to sleep. We need to sleep to regenerate, recover, process information and discard stressors and anxieties we don’t need. When we investigate why we need sleep, the simple answer is that we need sleep simply to get through the next day, every day. Sleep is important for the body, the mind, the immune system and the emotional system. We need sleep in order to function properly day after day. Whether we want to perform simple tasks, complex tasks, think, get fit, or lose weight, it is vital that we get a good night’s sleep every night in order to be able to do so.
